The end of leaded gasoline, 1986 to 2021

The year each country banned leaded gasoline (petrol) for cars and trucks. Japan first, in 1986; Algeria last, in July 2021.

Remember this

Lead was added to gasoline from 1922. The data starts in 1986: earlier partial bans (on regular grade, or for new cars) are not shown. 33 countries banned it in 2006, a record. The UN says ending it prevents over a million premature deaths a year. Some small aircraft and racing still use leaded fuel.
